Stephen Cheeke examines two related phenomena: idolatry (a false substitution, a sexual betrayal), and the poetics of transfiguration (to elevate or glorify subject matter not thought of as conventionally poetic, to praise). Central to the book is the question of the 'translation' of religion into art and aesthetics, a process which supposedly undergirds the advent of the museum age and makes possible the idea of a 'religion of art' as a phenomenon of late century Aestheticism. Such a phenomenon is prepared for, however, through the engagement with Christian painting and classical sculpture in the work of these four writers. All four thought carefully about the ways in which a particular mimetic impulse of 'making-live' in artworks could be connected to religious experience. 0This meant exploring the nature of the link between seeing and believing-visualising in order to conceive, to verify, but also in the sense of being acted upon by the visible. All four wrote about the great power of artworks to transfigure the objects of their attention. In each case, there emerges the possibility of a secret sexual knowledge hiding within, or lying on the other side of the sensuous knowledge of aesthesis. All four wondered whether this was inherently hostile to Christianity, or whether it may, finally, be an accommodation within it. 600 10 $a Ruskin, John, $d 1819-1900 $x Criticism and interpretation. 600 10 $a Browning, Robert, $d 1812-1889 $x Criticism and interpretation. 600 10 $a Rossetti, Dante Gabriel, $d 1828-1882 $x Criticism and interpretation. 600 10 $a Pater, Walter, $d 1839-1894 $x Criticism and interpretation. 600 17 $a Browning, Robert, $d 1812-1889. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00034203 600 17 $a Pater, Walter, $d 1839-1894. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00043969 600 17 $a Rossetti, Dante Gabriel, $d 1828-1882. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00044074 600 17 $a Ruskin, John, $d 1819-1900. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00030222 650 0 $a English literature $y 19th century $x History and criticism. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008102754 650 0 $a Christianity and literature $z Great Britain $x History $y 19th century. 650 7 $a Christianity and literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00859681 650 7 $a English literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00911989 651 7 $a Great Britain. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204623 650 7 $a Kunst. $2 gnd $0 (DE-588)4114333-4 650 7 $a Literatur. $2 gnd $0 (DE-588)4035964-5 650 7 $a Englisch. $2 gnd $0 (DE-588)4014777-0 650 7 $a Religion. $2 gnd $0 (DE-588)4049396-9 650 7 $a PraÌraffaeliten. $2 gnd $0 (DE-588)4175547-9 648 7 $a 1800-1899 $2 fast 655 7 $a Criticism, interpretation, etc. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231019023506.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=7F647A90FB5411E7891C5F6197128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
