Key developments in victims' legal representation in the Ongwen case. 520 $a "Victims have a right to participate in trials at the International Criminal Court (ICC), giving them a voice in the courtroom. Victims participate through lawyers, who, according to court rules, victims have a say in choosing. But in recent cases, the ICC has increasingly taken over the decision of which lawyers will represent victims, with minimal input from the victims themselves. While the court has cited legitimate reasons for this ... it risks missing an opportunity to empower victims early in proceedings. In 2015, a controversial decision on victims' legal representation in one of the court's cases - that of former Lord's Resistance Army commander Dominic Ongwen - threw these competing goals into sharp relief. [This report] draws lessons from the Ongwen cae and broader court practice. It calls on ICC judges and its Registry to rethink their approach to victims' legal representation, and to develoop a shared policy to prioritize victims' choices and ensure their voices are heard and integrated into their legal representation. The report also urges ICC member countries, who fund the court, to support new policies with the resources necessary for success."--Back cover. 530 $a Also available online via the World Wide Web. 610 20 $a International Criminal Court. 610 27 $a International Criminal Court. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00744466 650 0 $a Victims of crimes (International law) 650 0 $a Victims of crimes $x Legal status, laws, etc. $z Uganda. 650 0 $a Crimes against humanity $z Uganda. 650 0 $a War crimes $z Uganda. 650 0 $a Genocide $z Uganda. 650 0 $a International crimes $z Uganda. 650 7 $a Crimes against humanity. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00883142 650 7 $a Genocide. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00940208 650 7 $a International crimes. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01761758 650 7 $a Victims of crimes (International law) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01982606 650 7 $a Victims of crimes $x Legal status, laws, etc. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01166298 650 7 $a War crimes. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01170465 651 7 $a Uganda. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01210282 710 2 $a Human Rights Watch (Organization), $e issuing body. 776 08 $i Online version: $t Who will stand for us? : victims' legal representation at the ICC in the Ongwen case and beyond 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20220419012931.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=6A51A8B8580511E8A8F83C5097128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
