The French-born artist's creativity first emerged when he was a child living in Tunisia, where he played among the ruins of the ancient Phoenician capital of Carthage. His practice is dedicated to exploring the dialogue between life and death, the found and the fabricated, which led to the creation of a world of miniature forms and figures that he uses as source material in his large-scale paintings. Distant and yet intensely absorbing, the luminous canvases initiate a provocative dialogue between the abstract and the figurative. The exhibition will consist of an installation of forty-five canvases and twenty-five sculptures. For fifty years Barande kept his practice out of the public eye, so that his achievements remain largely unknown to the art establishment. His works are all unsigned, undated and untitled, and they are not for sale. This freedom from commercial considerations has allowed him to pursue his artistic goals without compromise, to disappear behind his work. David Galloway persuaded Barande to share his vision with others - first through publications, then through exhibitions. Barande will only show his work once in any single country. 600 10 $a Barande, Henri $v Exhibitions. 600 17 $a Barande, Henri. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00451125 650 0 $a Painting, Abstract $v Exhibitions. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010104771 650 0 $a Sculpture, Abstract $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Painting, Modern $y 20th century $v Exhibitions. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008108779 650 0 $a Painting, Modern $y 21st century $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Sculpture, Modern $y 20th century $v Exhibitions. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008111392 650 0 $a Sculpture, Modern $y 21st century $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Art, Modern $y 20th century $v Exhibitions. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007101136 650 0 $a Art, Modern $y 21st century $v Exhibitions. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007101370 650 0 $a Artists $z France $y 20th century $v Exhibitions. 650 7 $a Artists. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00817559 651 7 $a France. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204289 648 7 $a 1900-1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a Exhibition catalogs. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1424028 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1424028 700 1 $a Galloway, David D., $e editor. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79018442 710 2 $a Saatchi Gallery, $e host institution. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n95083713 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20191217032052.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=2BE38552EB9E11E7A465B32097128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
