520 $a A bacteriologist goes to Berlin to recuperate from stab wounds inflicted by his mentally-unbalanced wife (who is later institutionalized for treatment). A friend there introduces him to a dancer and is attracted to her right away. When she rejects him, he then moves to Paris, where he learns the dancer is sailing with her father to perform in America. He manages to catch up with her on the ship, but he gets turned down by her again. He is asleep and dreaming that he is exploring the lost continent of Atlantis (hence the title) when the ship starts to sink and panic ensues. He and the dancer (whose father goes down with the ship) are in the same lifeboat when a New York-bound freighter rescues them. They then make it to New York City's Greenwich Village, where the dancer turns him down once more. He then meets a sculptress; they go off together to an isolated cabin, where he collapses when informed of his wife's death. When he recovers, they move back to Europe to be parents to his three young children. There is an alternate ending to a Russian version (included) which has the bacteriologist dying of a massive heart attack upon learning of his wife's death.
