In 'Work!' Elspeth H. Brown traces the history of modeling from the advent of photographic modeling in the early twentieth century to the rise of the supermodel in the 1980s. Brown outlines how the modeling industry sanitized and commercialized models' sex appeal in order to elicit and channel desire into buying goods. She shows how this new form of sexuality-whether exhibited in the Ziegfeld Follies girls' performance of Anglo-Saxon femininity or in African American models' portrayal of black glamour in the 1960s-became a central element in consumer capitalism and a practice that has always been shaped by queer sensibilities. By outlining the paradox that queerness lies at the center of capitalist heteronormativity and telling the largely unknown story of queer models and photographers, Brown offers an out of the ordinary history of twentieth-century American culture and capitalism. 650 0 $a Photography of women $x Social aspects $z United States. 650 0 $a Fashion photography $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Commercial photography $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Models (Persons) $z United States. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh97009101 650 0 $a Women in popular culture $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Femininity in popular culture $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Sex in advertising $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Queer theory. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2006001835 650 7 $a PHOTOGRAPHY / General. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a Commercial photography. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00869562 650 7 $a Fashion photography. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00921655 650 7 $a Femininity in popular culture. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01200490 650 7 $a Models (Persons) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01024387 650 7 $a Queer theory. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01739572 650 7 $a Sex in advertising. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01114455 650 7 $a Women in popular culture. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01177953 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 650 7 $a Idee. $2 gnd 650 7 $a Mannequin. $2 gnd 650 7 $a AÌsthetik. $2 gnd 650 7 $a Fotomodell. $2 gnd 650 7 $a TaÌnzerin. $2 gnd 650 7 $a Werbefotografie. $2 gnd 648 7 $a 1900-1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 08 $i Online version: $a Brown, Elspeth H., 1961- $t Work! $d Durham : Duke University Press, 2019 $z 9781478002147 $w (DLC) 2018060227 941 $a 2 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231017025007.0 952 $l USUX851 $d 20210105040717.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=F296A9B20C2C11EAA2E5F95597128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
