Five chapters trace the development within academic anthropology of the concepts of culture, social class, national character, value, and civilization, and their dissemination to non-anthropologists. As Americans came to think of culture anthropologically, as a complex whole far broader and more inclusive than Matthew Arnold's "the best that has been thought and said," so, too, did they come to see American communities as stratified into social classes distinguished by their subcultures, to attribute the making of the American character to socialization rather than birth, to locate the distinctiveness of American culture in its unconscious canons of choice, and to view American culture and civilization in a global perspective. --Book Jacket. 650 0 $a Ethnology $z United States $x History. 651 0 $a United States $x Civilization. 650 0 $a Social classes $z United States $x History. $z Social classes $z United States $x History. 650 0 $a Cultural pluralism $z United States $x History. $z Cultural pluralism $z United States $x History. 650 0 $a Subculture $z United States $x History. 650 0 $a National characteristics, American. 941 $a 2 952 $l USUX851 $d 20160825072055.0 952 $l OIAX792 $d 20120704011723.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=D76F60BCC59D11E188F7F9E06AFF544EInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
