The issue is not just that the Chinese fought for such a long time--from the Marco Polo Bridge Incident of July 1937 until the close of the Korean War in 1953--across such vast territory. As Hans van de Ven explains, the greatest puzzles lie in understanding China's simultaneous external and internal wars. Much is at stake, politically, in how this story is told. Today in its official history and public commemorations, the People's Republic asserts Chinese unity against Japan during World War II. But this overwrites the era's stark divisions between Communists and Nationalists, increasingly erasing the civil war from memory. Van de Ven argues that the war with Japan, the civil war, and its aftermath were in fact of a piece--a singular process of conflict and political change. Reintegrating the Communist uprising with the Sino-Japanese War, he shows how the Communists took advantage of wartime to increase their appeal, how fissures between the Nationalists and Communists affected anti-Japanese resistance, and how the fractious coalition fostered conditions for revolution. In the process, the Chinese invented an influential paradigm of war, wherein the Clausewitzian model of total war between well-defined interstate enemies gave way to murky campaigns of national liberation involving diverse domestic and outside belligerents. This history disappears when the realities of China's mid-century conflicts are stripped from public view. China at War recovers them.-- $c Provided by publisher. 611 27 $a Civil War (China : 1945-1949) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01352298 611 27 $a Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01431391 650 0 $a Nationalism $z China $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Communism $z China $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Sino-Japanese War, 1937-1945. 651 0 $a China $x History $y 1937-1945. 651 0 $a China $x History $y Civil War, 1945-1949. 651 0 $a China $x History $y 1949-1976. 651 0 $a China $x Politics and government $y 20th century. 650 7 $a Communism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00870421 650 7 $a Nationalism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01033832 650 7 $a Politics and government. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01919741 651 7 $a China. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01206073 648 7 $a 1900-1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 775 08 $i Preceded by (expression): $a Van de Ven, Hans J. $t China at war. $d London : Profile Books Ltd, 2017 $z 1781251940 $w (OCoLC)975105594 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20191214022607.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=A497195E580511E8A8F83C5097128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
