After moving to Argenteuil, a suburban town on the outskirts of Paris, the artist (1840-1926) was inspired to paint the local highway bridge located near his house on the banks of the Seine. Le Pont de Bois (1872) depicts the bridge under repair following the destruction wrought by the war, and as such is a tribute to France's return to order. A composition of startling modernity, the painting also became a starting point for further explorations of this theme. Focusing on twelve major paintings by the artist, this book examines how Monet used the motif of the bridge as a laboratory for his innovative ideas, in his desire to establish himself as a leader of the avant-garde. it also looks at the Impressionists' artistic response in the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War and the way in which photographers and painters highlighted the remarkable range of brides in Paris"--Publisher's description. 600 10 $a Monet, Claude, $d 1840-1926 $v Exhibitions. 600 10 $a Monet, Claude, $d 1840-1926 $x Themes, motives $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Bridges in art $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Impressionism (Art) $v Exhibitions. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2009126798 650 0 $a Art, French $y 19th century $v Exhibitions. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007101404 650 0 $a Art, French $y 20th century $v Exhibitions. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007101405 700 1 $a Thomson, Richard, $d 1953- $e author. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n82117052 700 1 $a Kelly, Simon $q (Simon R.), $e author. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2008020574 700 12 $a Monet, Claude, $d 1840-1926. $t Paintings. $k Selections. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2013066516 710 2 $a National Gallery of Canada, $e host institution. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79043161 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20180103033637.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=B0E053E2F05411E7964A246697128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
