IGs are part of the agency but with some independence from the leadership. They are asked to conduct investigations at the request of management or Congress into wrong-doing or the efficiency and effectiveness of government programs. They are seen as a way of making sure that agencies carry out their mandates under law and of enhancing the ability of Congress to conduct oversight. In this book Nadia Hilliard looks at inspectors-general in the Departments of Justice, State, and Homeland Security in order to see if IGs enhance democratic control over these bureaucracies. She argues that the effectiveness of the IG as a means of democratic accountability varies depending on the degree of independence of the IG, the resources available, the stability of the leadership, the ability to develop an appropriate focus of work, and the ability to develop on-going programs of monitoring in the agency. Their contribution lies mainly in their ability to create a narrative about a government program and publicize that story"-- $c Provided by publisher. 650 0 $a Administrative agencies $z United States $x Auditing. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2009113603 650 0 $a Federal government $z United States. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008000835 650 0 $a Governmental investigations $z United States. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85056113 650 0 $a Misconduct in office $z United States $x Prevention. 650 0 $a Waste in government spending $z United States $x Prevention. 650 0 $a Legislative oversight $z United States. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85075838 650 7 $a POLITICAL SCIENCE $x Executive Branch. $x Executive Branch. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a POLITICAL SCIENCE $x Public Affairs & Administration. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a HISTORY $z United States $x 20th Century. $2 bisacsh 830 0 $a Studies in government and public policy. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n83730455 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20191217024424.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=7A82E156FAD211E7A45C351A97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
