The twelfth-century Latin poem called the 'Relatio metrica de duobus ducibus' has never been edited or translated before. On its surface, the poem retells a popular exemplum about an encounter between two warring dukes and a mysterious army from heaven. While retelling the story in verse, however, the poet has greatly expanded his prose source, elaborating its teachings about the importance of intercessions for the dead and introducing wholly new emphases on knightly piety and the benefits of dying for a holy cause. The present book, which offers the first edition, translation, and analysis of the poem, situates the 827-line poem in its literary and historical contexts. The publication of the 'Relatio metrica' should be of interest to scholars of medieval Latin poetry, Cluniac monasticism, and the spirituality of the Crusades. 505 00 $g General index. $g Abbreviations -- $g Introduction -- $t Appendix : the prose relatio de duobus ducibus (long version) -- $t The latin prose exemplum of the two dukes -- $t The manuscript of the relatio metrica -- $t Patterns in the poet's adaptations of the prose source -- $t The conditions of purgative suffering after death -- $t The morality of war and of the warrior class -- $t Elaborative allusions to the Old Testament and classical literature -- $t Biblical allusions -- $t Classical allusions -- $t Versification and language -- $t Prosody -- $t Rhyme -- $t Disposition of dactyls and spondees -- $t Hiatus, elision, and caesuras -- $t Final clausulae -- $t Vocabulary and idiom -- $t Syntax -- $t The poet's literary sources -- $t Classical and patristic latin literature -- $t Eleventh- and twelfth-century verse -- $t Bernard of cluny -- $t Other poetic sources of the later eleventh and twelfth centuries -- $t The authorship of the relatio metrica -- $t A work by Bernardus scriba? -- $t Bernardus scriba and Bernard of cluny -- $t Principles of the edition, translation, and commentary -- $t Edition and translation -- $t Commentary -- $t Appendix : the prose relatio de duobus ducibus (long version) -- $g Bibliography -- $g Indices -- $g Index of biblical passages cited in the commentary -- $g Index of primary sources and parallels cited in the commentary -- $g General index. 630 04 $a Relatio metrica de duobus ducibus. 650 0 $a Religious poetry, Latin. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh87000762 650 0 $a Poetry, Medieval $x History and criticism. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008109418 650 0 $a History $v Sources. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85061227 650 0 $a International relations $x History. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2005003436 650 0 $a Theology $x History. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh93009684 650 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00958235 650 7 $a International relations. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00977053 650 7 $a Religious poetry. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01094206 650 7 $a Theology. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01149559 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 $a Sources. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423900 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423900 700 1 $a Jones, Christopher A. $q (Christopher Andrew), $e author of commentary. $e author of commentary. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n99042966 700 1 $a Bruce, Scott G. $q (Scott Gordon), $d 1967- $e author of commentary. $e author of commentary. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no00052316 730 02 $i Container of (expression): $a Relatio metrica de duobus ducibus. $l English. 830 0 $a Publications of the Journal of medieval Latin ; $v 10. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/nr98039946 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20180110033018.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=CD3BE71AF5D411E7B33F7C0497128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
