At the heart of this story is a thirty-four-hour period in September 2008. During that day and half, Brian Sinclair, a middle-aged, non-Status Anishinaabeg resident of Manitoba's capital city, arrived in the emergency room of the Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg's major downtown hospital, was left untreated and unattended to, and ultimately died from an easily treatable infection. His death reflects a particular structure of indifference born of and maintained by colonialism. McCallum and Perry present the ways in which Sinclair, once erased and ignored, came to represent diffuse, yet singular and largely dehumanized ideas about Indigenous people, modernity, and decline in cities. This story tells us about ordinary indigeneity in the City of Winnipeg through Sinclair's experience and restores the complex humanity denied him in his interactions with Canadian health and legal systems, both before and after his death. Structures of Indifference completes the story left untold by the inquiry into Sinclair's death, the 2014 report of which omitted any consideration of underlying factors, including racism and systemic discrimination."-- $c Provided by publisher. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references. 600 10 $a Sinclair, Brian, $d 1963-2008 $x Death and burial. 610 20 $a Health Sciences Centre (Winnipeg, Man.) 610 27 $a Health Sciences Centre (Winnipeg, Man.) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00660178 650 0 $a Ojibwa Indians $z Winnipeg $z Winnipeg $v Case studies. 650 0 $a MeÌtis $z Winnipeg $z Winnipeg $v Case studies. 650 0 $a Medical personnel $x Malpractice $z Winnipeg $z Winnipeg $v Case studies. 650 0 $a Racism in medicine $z Winnipeg $z Winnipeg $v Case studies. 650 0 $a Racism $z Winnipeg $z Winnipeg $v Case studies. 650 0 $a Race discrimination $z Winnipeg $z Winnipeg $v Case studies. 651 0 $a Winnipeg (Man.) $x Race relations $v Case studies. 650 7 $a HISTORY $z United States $x General. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a Medical personnel $x Malpractice. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01014440 650 7 $a MeÌtis. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01031977 650 7 $a Ojibwa Indians. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01045067 650 7 $a Race discrimination. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01086465 650 7 $a Race relations. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01086509 650 7 $a Racism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01086616 650 7 $a Racism in medicine. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01744790 651 7 $a Manitoba $z Winnipeg. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01205803 650 2 $a Indians, North American. 650 2 $a Racism. 650 2 $a Hospital Administration. 650 2 $a Malpractice. 655 7 $a Case studies. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01423765 700 1 $a Perry, Adele. 776 1 $a McCallum, Mary Jane, 1974-, author. $t Structures of indifference.: $d Winnipeg, Manitoba : University of Manitoba Press, 2018. $w (CaOONL)20189020423 941 $a 2 952 $l PLAX964 $d 20230718093248.0 952 $l USUX851 $d 20190305060432.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=6145BA5226B811E994CCD44997128E48 994 $a 92 $b IWAInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
