Despite much anecdotal evidence, few scholars have attempted to test the expectations gap thesis empirically. This is the first systematic study to prove the existence of the expectations gap and to identify the factors that contribute to the public's disappointment in a given president. Using data from five original surveys, the authors confirm that the expectations gap is manifest in public opinion. It leads to lower approval ratings, lowers the chance that a president will be reelected, and even contributes to the success of the political party that does not hold the White House in congressional midterm elections. This study provides important insights not only on the American presidency and public opinion, but also on citizens' trust in government"-- $c Provided by publisher. 650 0 $a Presidents $z United States $x Public opinion. 651 0 $a United States $x Politics and government. 650 7 $a POLITICAL SCIENCE / Government / Executive Branch. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a Political science. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01069781 650 7 $a Presidents $x Public opinion. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01075796 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 650 7 $a Politik. $0 (DE-588)4046514-7 $2 gnd 650 7 $a PraÌsident. $0 (DE-588)4115611-0 $2 gnd 650 7 $a Regierung. $0 (DE-588)4049012-9 $2 gnd 650 7 $a OÌffentliche Meinung. $0 (DE-588)4043152-6 $2 gnd 651 7 $a USA. $0 (DE-588)4078704-7 $2 gnd 700 1 $a Silva, Carol L. 700 1 $a Jenkins-Smith, Hank C. 856 42 $z Additional Information at Google Books $u http://books.google.com/books?isbn=9780472119141 941 $a 3 952 $l PLAX964 $d 20230718091706.0 952 $l USUX851 $d 20190103042705.0 952 $l SOAX911 $d 20151001051225.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=CA21493C680311E588D327A2DAD10320 994 $a C0 $b IOKInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
