Through in-depth ethnographic research in Kansas City, I explore how urban food projects-a key pillar of the city's green urban policy agenda-are conceived, implemented, and how they are perceived by residents of 'food deserts,' those intended to benefit from these projects. In doing so, I examine the narratives and histories that mostly white local food advocates are guided by, and I uplift an alternative urban history of Kansas City-one that centers the contributions of Black and brown residents to urban prosperity, and highlights how displacement of communities of color, through green development, has historically been a key urban development strategy in the city. This book highlights how myopic focus on green urbanism, as a solution to myriad urban 'problems,' ends up reinforcing racial inequity, and uplifting structural whiteness. Whiteness is now oft-publicly discussed in the U.S. This makes fine-grained analysis of how whiteness takes up space in our cities even more important. I examine this process intimately, and in doing so, flesh out our understanding of how racial inequities can be (re)created by everyday urban actors"-- $c Provided by publisher. 505 00 $g ch. 8 $t Imagining Another Way to Live in the City Confronting Spatialized Whiteness in Urban Greening Initiatives. $g ch. 2 $t Creating White Public Space in the Urban Food System Institutionalized Understandings of Race and Space in Kansas City -- $g ch. 3 $t Getting a Seat at the Table White Local "Foodies" and Green Urban Development Policy -- $g ch. 4 $t "Don't You Know You Live in a Food Desert?": Food Charity Programming and the Lived Realities of Seeking Food Aid in Kansas City -- $g ch. 5 $t "We Know We're Being Treated Like Tokens": Black Urban Farmers Navigating and Contesting Structural Racism in Kansas City's Local Food Economy -- $g ch. 6 $t "Apparently We Grow Culturally Appropriate Food in That" Green Urban Citizenship and the Strategic Utilization of Urban Agriculture Policy to Meet Community Needs -- $g ch. 7 $t "We Can Change the Landscape" Reinscribing Black Geographies into City Space via Urban Agriculture -- $g ch. 8 $t Imagining Another Way to Live in the City Confronting Spatialized Whiteness in Urban Greening Initiatives. 650 0 $a Sustainable urban development $z Kansas City. $z Kansas City. 650 0 $a Sustainable urban development $z Kansas City. $z Kansas City. 650 0 $a White people $x Race identity $z Kansas City. $z Kansas City. 650 0 $a White people $x Race identity $z Kansas City. $z Kansas City. 650 0 $a Green movement $z Kansas City. $z Kansas City. 650 0 $a Green movement $z Kansas City. $z Kansas City. 650 0 $a Minorities $z Kansas City. $z Kansas City. 650 0 $a Minorities $z Kansas City. $z Kansas City. 650 0 $a Marginality, Social $z Kansas City. $z Kansas City. 650 0 $a Marginality, Social $z Kansas City. $z Kansas City. 650 0 $a Social stratification $z Kansas City. $z Kansas City. 650 0 $a Social stratification $z Kansas City. $z Kansas City. 650 6 $a Urbanisme durable $z Kansas City. $z Kansas City. 650 6 $a Urbanisme durable $z Kansas City. $z Kansas City. 650 6 $a Ecologisme $z Kansas City. $z Kansas City. 650 6 $a Ecologisme $z Kansas City. $z Kansas City. 650 6 $a Stratification sociale $z Kansas City. $z Kansas City. 650 6 $a Stratification sociale $z Kansas City. $z Kansas City. 650 7 $a Green movement $2 fast 650 7 $a Marginality, Social $2 fast 650 7 $a Minorities $2 fast 650 7 $a Social stratification $2 fast 650 7 $a Sustainable urban development $2 fast 650 7 $a White people $x Race identity $2 fast 651 7 $a Kansas $z Kansas City $2 fast 651 7 $a Missouri $z Kansas City $2 fast 776 08 $i Online version: $a Kolavalli, Chhaya. $t Well-intentioned whiteness. $d Athens, Georgia : University of Georgia Press, [2023] $z 9780820364117 $w (OCoLC)1356800309 $w (OCoLC)1356800309 830 0 $a Geographies of justice and social transformation ; $v 56. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20240517010924.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=D326ED10141211EF8F56A7732FECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
