He describes his practice as "code-switching"--mixing disparate elements to create layers of meaning--to account for his wide-ranging interests. This catalogue focuses on a series of repurposed quilts (many made in the 19th century) that embodies this interest in mixture. Informed by the significance of quilts to the Underground Railroad, Biggers transforms the quilts into new works using materials such as paint, tar, glitter, and charcoal to add his own layers of codes, whether they be historical, political, or purely artistic. Insightful essays survey Biggers's career, his art in relation to music, and the history upon which the series draws. Also featured is a short yet powerful graphic essay by an award-winning illustrator that introduces the layered meanings inherent in the art and craft of quilting."--Cover. 600 10 $a Biggers, Sanford $v Exhibitions. 600 17 $a Biggers, Sanford. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00500543 650 0 $a Installations (Art) $y 21st century $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Mixed media (Art) $z United States $y 21st century $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Quilts in art $y 21st century. 650 7 $a Installations (Art) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00974250 650 7 $a Mixed media (Art) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01765020 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 648 7 $a 2000-2099 $2 fast 655 7 $a Exhibition catalogs. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01424028 655 7 $a Exhibition catalogs. $2 lcgft 700 1 $a Andersson, Andrea, $e curator. 700 1 $a Bessa, Antonio Sergio, $e curator. 700 12 $a Biggers, Sanford. $t Works. $k Selections. 710 2 $a Bronx Museum of the Arts, $e publisher. $e publisher. 710 2 $a Contemporary Arts Center (New Orleans, La.), $e host institution. 710 2 $a California African-American Museum, $e host institution. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20220317014111.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=C3A568CCFE2B11EAA9C7A44D1FECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
