Artists like Max Klinger, Edvard Munch, and Ludwig von Hofmann, and writers like AndreÌ Gide, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and Rainer Maria Rilke sought to create a 'New Weimar and position Friedrich Nietzsche at its head as the radical prophet of modernity. Nietzsche's profound thinking, expressive language, and poignant aphoristic style made him the ideal philosopher of modernism. It is only as an aesthetic phenomenon that existence and the world are eternally justified. With philosophical maxims, such as this from The Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche became an extraordinary influence on artists and critics in their search for a 'new art,' a 'new man,' and, ultimately, a 'new society.' In 1902, two years after the philosopher's death, Max Klinger was commissioned to carve his portrait for the Villa Silberblick in Weimar, where the cult of Nietzsche was organized. Starting from a heavily reworked death mask, he executed the famous marble herm that still today adorns the reception room of the Nietzsche Archive. Only three monumental bronze versions were cast, one of which is now in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada. With this sculpture in focus, accompanied by a series of paintings, drawings, plaster casts, and small bronzes, 'Radical Modernism' will show how Klinger and his patrons invented the 'official' Nietzsche, transforming a highly expressionist portrait into an idealized classical cult image."--publisher 600 10 $a Nietzsche, Friedrich Wilhelm, $d 1844-1900 $x Influence $v Exhibitions. 610 20 $a Nietzsche-Archiv $x History $v Exhibitions. 600 16 $a Klinger, Max, $d 1857-1920 $v Expositions. 610 26 $a MuseÌe des beaux-arts du Canada $v Catalogues. 600 16 $a Nietzsche, Friedrich Wilhelm, $d 1844-1900 $x Influence $v Expositions. 610 26 $a Nietzsche-Archiv $x Histoire $v Expositions. 600 16 $a Kessler, Harry, $c Graf, $d 1868-1937 $v Expositions. 600 17 $a Kessler, Harry, $c Graf, $d 1868-1937. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00019886 600 17 $a Klinger, Max, $d 1857-1920. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00040158 600 17 $a Nietzsche, Friedrich Wilhelm, $d 1844-1900. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00031611 610 27 $a National Gallery of Canada. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00531857 610 27 $a Nietzsche-Archiv. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00686089 600 17 $a Nietzsche, Friedrich, $d 1844-1900. $2 gnd 650 0 $a Modernism (Art) $z Germany $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Artists $z Germany $v Exhibitions. 650 6 $a Modernisme (Art) $z Allemagne $v Expositions. 650 6 $a Modernisme (EstheÌtique) $z Allemagne $v Expositions. 650 6 $a Art allemand $y 20e sieÌcle $v Expositions. 650 7 $a Art $x Political aspects. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00815309 650 7 $a Art and society. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00815432 650 7 $a Art, German. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00816307 650 7 $a Influence (Literary, artistic, etc.) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00972484 650 7 $a Modernism (Aesthetics) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01024439 650 7 $a Modernism (Art) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01024442 651 7 $a Germany. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01210272 650 7 $a KuÌnstlerschule. $2 gnd 650 7 $a KuÌnstler. $2 gnd 650 7 $a Kunst. $2 gnd 651 7 $a Weimar. $2 gnd 648 7 $a 1900-1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a Catalogs. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423692 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423692 655 7 $a Exhibition catalogs. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1424028 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1424028 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 7 $a Ausstellungskatalog $x National Gallery of Canada $y 18.04.2019 - 25.08.2019 $z Ottawa. $0 (DE-588)4135467-9. $2 gnd 655 7 $a Bildband. $0 (DE-588)4145395-5. $2 gnd 710 2 $a National Gallery of Canada, $e host institution. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79043161 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231017011911.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=FD38D5DA083E11EABF3FA51A97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
