Unlike the widespread Use of Sarum, the Use of Hereford was confined mainly to its cathedral and diocese, which enabled it to maintain its individuality until the mid sixteenth centuty. This monograph examines the Use of Hereford in the context of the British diocesan rites in general, as well as considering its possible Lotharingian origins during the late eleventh century and its surviving sources, both manuscript and printed. In addition to its more familiar missals, breviaries and gradual, lesser known sources include fragments of early Hereford service-books dismembered at the Reformation, and now hidden away as binding or archival scrap in libraries and record offices. The distinctiveness of the Use of Hereford is also discussed as well as the possible reasons for its continuation, due probably to its cathedral's unique constitutional and liturgical identity, which enabled it to maintain its integrity in a Province largely dominated by Sarum Use. 504 $a Includes select bibliography (pages 51-56). 505 0 $a British medieval dioceses and their rites -- The use of Hereford and its possible origins -- Surviving sources representative of the use of Hereford -- The distinctiveness of the use of Hereford 610 20 $a Church of England. $b Diocese of Hereford. 610 20 $a Church of England $x History and criticism. $v Texts $x History and criticism. 610 27 $a Church of England. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00532932 610 27 $a Church of England. $b Diocese of Hereford. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00658651 650 7 $a Liturgics. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01000579 651 0 $a Hereford (England) $x Religious life and customs. 651 7 $a England $z Hereford. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01211783 830 0 $a Alcuin/GROW liturgical study ; $v 89. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231117015422.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=1D1EDCA278F711ECAF30597D2FECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
