Historian Ralph A. Austen here tells the remarkable story of an African world that grew out of more than one thousand years of trans-Saharan trading. Perhaps the most enduring impact of this trade and the common cultural reference point of trans-Saharan Africa was Islam. Austen traces this faith in its various forms-as a legal system for regulating trade, an inspiration for reformist movements, and a vehicle of literacy and cosmopolitan knowledge. He also analyzes the impact of European overseas expansion, which marginalized trans-Saharan commerce in global terms but stimulated its local growth. Indeed, trans-Saharan culture not only adapted to colonial changes, but often thrived upon them, remaining a potent force into the twenty-first century. 500 $a New Book -- October -- 2014 651 0 $a Sahara $x Civilization. 650 0 $a Trade routes $z Sahara $x History. 651 0 $a Sahara $x History. $x History. 650 0 $a Islam $z Sahara $x History. 650 7 $a Civilization. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00862898 650 7 $a Commerce. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00869279 650 7 $a Islam. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00979776 650 7 $a Trade routes. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01153852 651 7 $a Sahara. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01242088 650 7 $a Verkehrsweg $z Sahara. $2 idsbb 650 7 $a Handel $z Sahara $z Sahara $y Geschichte. $2 idsbb 650 7 $a Islam $x Handel $z Sahara $y Geschichte. $2 idsbb 650 7 $a Kolonialismus $x Wirtschaftsentwicklung $z Sahara. $2 idsbb 650 7 $a Wirtschaftsentwicklung $x Kolonialismus $z Sahara. $2 idsbb 650 7 $a Wirtschaft $z Nordafrika. $2 idsbb 650 7 $a Handel. $0 (DE-588)4023222-0 $2 gnd 650 7 $a Kulturvermittlung. $0 (DE-588)4165992-2 $2 gnd 650 7 $a Kolonialismus. $0 (DE-588)4073624-6 $2 gnd 651 7 $a Sahara $y Geschichte. $2 idsbb 651 7 $a Sahara. $0 (DE-588)4051293-9 $2 gnd 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 830 0 $a New Oxford world history. 941 $a 2 952 $l USUX851 $d 20171107020955.0 952 $l PNAX964 $d 20141030010202.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=0F1C94005FFA11E49C737FD9DAD10320 994 $a C0 $b IX2Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
