It is an intimate and epic account of two Germans-Eva born Jewish, Otto born Catholic-who worked with a little-known German political group that resisted and fought against Hitler in Germany before 1933 and then in exile in Paris before the German invasion of France in May 1940. After their improbable escapes from separate internment and imprisonment in Europe, Eva obtained refuge in America in October 1940 where she worked to rescue other endangered political refugees, including Otto, with the help of Eleanor Roosevelt. As revealed in recently declassified records, Eva and Otto later engaged in different secret assignments with the US Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in support of the Allied war effort. Despite their vastly different backgrounds, Eva and Otto gave each other hope and strength as they acted upon what they understood to be an ethical duty to help others threatened by fascism. The book provides a sobering insight into the personal risks and costs of a commitment to that duty. Their unusually beautiful writing-directed to each other in diaries and correspondence during two long periods of wartime separation-also reveals an unlikely and inspiring love story."-- $c Provided by publisher. 600 10 $a Pfister, Eva Lewinski, $d 1910-1991. 600 10 $a Pfister, Otto, $d 1900-1985. 610 10 $a United States. $b Office of Strategic Services $x Officials and employees $v Biography. 610 20 $a Internationaler Sozialistischer Kampfbund $x History. 610 27 $a Internationaler Sozialistischer Kampfbund. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00641699 610 17 $a United States. $b Office of Strategic Services $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00542242 611 27 $a World War (1939-1945) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01180924 650 0 $a Political refugees $z United States $v Biography. 650 0 $a Anti-Nazi movement $z Germany $v Biography. 650 0 $a Anti-Nazi movement $z France $v Biography. 650 0 $a World War, 1939-1945 $x Secret service $z United States. 650 0 $a Refugees $x Government policy $z United States. 650 0 $a World War, 1939-1945 $x Refugees $z United States. 650 7 $a Anti-Nazi movement. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00810297 650 7 $a Employees. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00909111 650 7 $a Political refugees. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01069678 650 7 $a Refugees. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01092797 650 7 $a Refugees $x Government policy. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01092811 650 7 $a Secret service. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01110661 651 7 $a France. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204289 651 7 $a Germany. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01210272 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 648 7 $a 1939-1945 $2 fast 655 7 $a Biographies. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01919896 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 700 1 $a Pfister, Katherine D., $d 1946- $e author. 700 1 $a Pfister, Peter J., $d 1948- $e author. 776 08 $i Online version: $a Pfister, Thomas L., 1948- $t Eva and Otto $d West Lafayette, Indiana : Purdue University Press, [2020] $z 9781612496153 $w (DLC) 2019026492 941 $a 1 952 $l USUX851 $d 20200204031138.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=F9767A642DF611EAB868BF0597128E48 994 $a 92 $b IWAInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
