Anglican Conformists such as Lancelot Andrewes and Jeremy Taylor upheld set forms of prayer in the Book of Common Prayer, a book designed to unite the nation in worship. Puritan Reformers and Dissenters such as John Milton and John Bunyan rejected the prayer book and advocated for extemporaneous or free prayer. In 1645, the mainly Puritan Long Parliament proscribed the Book of Common Prayer and dismantled the Anglican Church in the midst of civil war. This led Anglican poets and liturgists to defend their tradition with energy and erudition in print. In 1662, with monarchy restored, the mainly Anglican Cavalier Parliament reinstated the Church and its prayer book to impose religious uniformity. This galvanized English Nonconformity and Dissent and gave rise to a vibrant literary counter-tradition. Addressing this fascinating history, David Gay examines competing claims to spiritual gifts and graces in polemical texts and their influence on prayer and poetry. Amid the contention of differing voices, the disputed connection of poetry and prayer, imagination and religion, emerges as a central tension in early modern literature and culture."-- $c Provided by publisher. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references (pages 189-201) and index. 505 00 $t John Bunyan: The Nameless Terrible Instrument. $t Jeremy Taylor and Henry Vaughan: The Stock of Nature and Art -- $t John Milton (1634-1650): The Spirit of Utterance -- $t John Milton (1650-1674): The Spirit of Prayer -- $t John Bunyan: The Nameless Terrible Instrument. 600 10 $a Andrewes, Lancelot, $d 1555-1626 $x Criticism and interpretation. 600 10 $a Herbert, George, $d 1593-1633 $x Criticism and interpretation. 600 10 $a Vaughan, Henry, $d 1621-1695 $x Criticism and interpretation. 600 10 $a Taylor, Jeremy, $d 1613-1667 $x Criticism and interpretation. 600 10 $a Milton, John, $d 1608-1674 $x Criticism and interpretation. 600 10 $a Bunyan, John, $d 1628-1688 $x Criticism and interpretation. 600 17 $a Andrewes, Lancelot, $d 1555-1626. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00068778 600 17 $a Bunyan, John, $d 1628-1688. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00029103 600 17 $a Herbert, George, $d 1593-1633. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00051875 600 17 $a Milton, John, $d 1608-1674. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00029106 600 17 $a Taylor, Jeremy, $d 1613-1667. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00037937 600 17 $a Vaughan, Henry, $d 1621-1695. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00050638 648 7 $a 1500-1700 $2 fast 650 0 $a English literature $y Early modern, 1500-1700 $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a Christian poetry, English $y Early modern, 1500-1700 $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a Prayer $z England $x History $y 17th century. 650 0 $a Religion and literature $z England $x History $y 17th century. 650 0 $a Polemics in literature. 650 0 $a Prayer in literature. 650 7 $a Christian poetry, English $x Early modern. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01710942 650 7 $a English literature $x Early modern. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01710960 650 7 $a Polemics in literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01068342 650 7 $a Prayer. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01074680 650 7 $a Prayer in literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01074722 650 7 $a Religion and literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01093839 651 7 $a England. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01219920 655 7 $a Criticism, interpretation, etc. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411635 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 $a Literary criticism. $2 lcgft 776 08 $i Online version: $a Gay, David, 1955- $t Gifts and graces. $d Toronto ; Buffalo ; London : University of Toronto Press, 2021 $z 9781487531928 $z 9781487531928 $w (OCoLC)1226498586 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231117020234.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=EC59B5D81DF111EDA8BEF4A423ECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
