This reluctance caused him to allow others to rule, and rule surprisingly well, in his name. On its own terms, the Neronian Empire was in fact remarkably successful. Nero's senior ministers were many and various, but notably they included a number of powerful women, such as his mother, Agrippina II, and his second and third wives, Poppaea Sabina and Statilia Messalina. Using the most recent archaeological, epigraphic, numismatic and literary research, the book explores issues such as court politics, banter and free speech; literary, technological and scientific advances; the Fire of 64, 'the persecution of Christians' and Nero's 'Golden House'; and the huge underlying strength, both constitutional and financial, of the Julio-Claudian Empire. -- $c From dust jacket. 600 00 $a Nero, $c Emperor of Rome, $d 37-68. 600 00 $a Nero, $c Emperor of Rome, $d 37-68 $x Friends and associates. 650 0 $a Emperors $z Rome $v Biography. 651 0 $a Rome $x Court and courtiers. 651 0 $a Rome $x History $y Nero, 54-68. 650 6 $a Empereurs $z Rome $v Biographies. 651 6 $a Rome $x Histoire $y 54-68 (NeÌron) 600 07 $a Nero, $c Emperor of Rome, $d 37-68. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00018934 650 7 $a Courts and courtiers. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00881829 650 7 $a Emperors. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00908898 650 7 $a Friendship. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00935174 651 7 $a Rome (Empire) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204885 648 7 $a 54-68 $2 fast 600 07 $a Nero $c RoÌmisches Reich, Kaiser $d 37-68 $2 gnd 651 7 $a RoÌmisches Reich $2 gnd 600 07 $a Nero, $c Emperor of Rome, $d 37-68. $2 nli 600 07 $a Nero, $c Emperor of Rome, $d 37-68 $x Friends and associates. $2 nli 650 7 $a Emperors $z Rome $v Biography. $2 nli 651 7 $a Rome $x Court and courtiers. $2 nli 651 7 $a Rome $x History $y Nero, 54-68. $2 nli 655 2 $a Biography 655 7 $a Biographies. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01919896 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 $a Biographies. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Biographies. $2 rvmgf 941 $a 1 $n 1 952 $l VXPE964 $d 20240219083435.0 $n 7 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=490E603ECF3111EE9084F518253FDB2A 994 $a C0 $b IOZInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
