Alfred places his own laws, dealing with everything from sanctuary to feuding to the theft of bees, between a lengthy translation of legal passages from the Bible and the legislation of the West-Saxon King Ine (r. 688-726), which rival his own in length and scope. This book is the first critical edition of the domboc published in over a century, as well as a new translation. Five introductory chapters offer fresh insights into the laws of Alfred and Ine, considering their backgrounds, their relationship to early medieval legal culture, their manuscript evidence and their reception in later centuries. Rather than a haphazard accumulation of ordinances, the domboc is shown to issue from deep reflection on the nature of law itself, whose effects would permanently alter the development of early English legislation. 600 00 $a Alfred, $c King of England, $d 849-899. $t Domboc. 610 20 $a Corpus Christi College (University of Cambridge). $b Library. $k Manuscript. $n 173 $x History. 650 0 $a Law, Anglo-Saxon. 650 0 $a Law $z England $x History $y To 1500. 650 0 $a Criminal law $z England $x History $y To 1500. 650 0 $a Civil law $z England $x History $y To 1500. 650 0 $a Law, Medieval. 650 0 $a Manuscripts, English (Old) $z Cambridge $z Cambridge $x History. 650 7 $a Law. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00993678 650 7 $a Law, Anglo-Saxon. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00994168 651 7 $a England. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01219920 648 7 $a To 1500 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 700 02 $i Container of (expression): $a Alfred, $c King of England, $d 849-899. $t Domboc. $l English. 700 02 $i Container of (work): $a Alfred, $c King of England, $d 849-899. $t Domboc. $l Old English. 700 1 $a Oliver, Lisi, $e author. 776 08 $i ebook version : $z 9781108897891 830 0 $a Studies in legal history. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231018012715.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=6A4C8012E9E911EBBBC9467A3DECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
