A Massachusetts minister named Manasseh Cutler was instrumental in opening this vast territory to veterans of the Revolutionary War and their families for settlement. Included in the Northwest Ordinance were three remarkable conditions: freedom of religion, free universal education, and most importantly, the prohibition of slavery. In 1788 the first band of pioneers set out from New England for the Northwest Territory under the leadership of Revolutionary War veteran General Rufus Putnam. They settled in what is now Marietta on the banks of the Ohio River. McCullough tells the story through five major characters: Cutler and Putnam; Cutler's son Ephraim; and two other men, one a carpenter turned architect, and the other a physician who became a prominent figure in American science. They and their families created a town in a primeval wilderness, while coping with such frontier realities as trees of a size never imagined, floods, fires, wolves, bears, even an earthquake, all the while negotiating a contentious and sometimes hostile relationship with the native people. Like so many of McCullough's subjects, they let no obstacle deter or defeat them. Drawn in great part from a rare and all-but-unknown collection of diaries and letters by the key figures, The Pioneers is a uniquely American story of people whose ambition and courage led them to remarkable accomplishments. 505 0 $a The Ohio country -- Forth to the wilderness -- Difficult times -- Havoc -- A new era commences -- The Burr conspiracy -- Adversities aplenty -- The cause of education -- The travelers -- Journey's end 511 $a Read by John Bedford Lloyd 600 10 $a Cutler, Manasseh, $d 1742-1823. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n85009150 600 10 $a Cutler, Ephraim, $d 1767-1853. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no95018090 600 10 $a Putnam, Rufus, $d 1738-1824. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n88187073 600 10 $a Barker, Joseph, $d 1765-1843. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n85089286 600 10 $a Hildreth, Samuel P. $q (Samuel Prescott), $d 1783-1863. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n86827162 610 10 $a United States. $t Ordinance of 1787. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n85347978 651 0 $a Ohio River Valley $x History $y To 1795. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85094296 651 0 $a Ohio River Valley $x History. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85094295 650 0 $a Pioneers $z Ohio River Valley $v Biography 650 0 $a Frontier and pioneer life $z Ohio River Valley. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008104188 651 0 $a Marietta (Ohio) $x History 651 0 $a United States $x History $y 1783-1815. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85140185 651 0 $a Northwest, Old $x History $y 1775-1865. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85092600 650 0 $a Pioneers $z Northwest, Old 655 7 $a Biographies. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919896 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 655 $a Audiobooks. 941 $a 1 952 $l JNPC081 $d 20231227013914.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=E2D1654EA48511EEB554F55F4FECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
