Although neither Madison nor his colleagues explained why they included a right to bear arms in the Bill of Rights, the Amendment itself explains that a state needed a well-regulated militia to provide for its "security," but what precisely worried the framers? The most reliable method of deducing why people acted as they did is to understand the imperatives they faced. During a debate over whether Virginia should ratify the Constitution and join the Union, Patrick Henry argued that the Constitution enabled Congress to subvert the slave system by disarming the militia--a terrifying prospect because the South lived in constant fear of slave insurrection. Later, Henry worked determinately to end Madison's political career. When he wrote the Bill of Rights, Madison--who, according to a colleague, was "haunted by the ghost of Patrick Henry"--sought to allay the fears Henry had stoked by providing that the militia could be armed by their own members. Some historians believe the framers wanted to safeguard the militia to reduce the need for a standing army, which was considered a threat to liberty. This book shows, however, that the Revolutionary War conclusively demonstrated that the militia were incapable as a military force. The real concern was preserving armed militia for slave control."-- $c Publisher's website. 610 10 $a United States. $t Constitution. $n 2nd Amendment. 600 10 $a Madison, James, $d 1751-1836 $x Influence. 600 17 $a Madison, James, $d 1751-1836. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00055654 630 07 $a Constitution (United States) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01356075 610 17 $a United States. $t Constitution. $n 2nd Amendment. $2 sears 600 17 $a Madison, James, $d 1751-1836 $x Influence. $2 sears 650 0 $a Firearms $x History $z United States $x History $y 18th century. 651 0 $a United States $x History $x History $y 18th century. 650 0 $a Paramilitary forces $x History $z United States $x States $x History $y 18th century. 650 0 $a African Americans $x History $z United States $x History $y 18th century. 650 0 $a Slavery $x History $z United States $x History $y 18th century. 650 0 $a Constitutional history $z United States $y 18th century. 650 7 $a Constitutional history. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00875777 650 7 $a Firearms $x Law and legislation. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00925588 650 7 $a Influence (Literary, artistic, etc.) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00972484 650 7 $a Militia. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01021608 650 7 $a Slavery $x Law and legislation. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01120465 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 650 7 $a Gun control $z United States $x History. $2 sears 651 7 $a United States $x History. $x History. $2 sears 650 7 $a Armed forces $x History. $z United States $x States $x History. $2 sears 650 7 $a Slavery $x History. $z United States $x History. $2 sears 650 7 $a Constitutional history $z United States. $2 sears 648 7 $a 1700-1799 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 $i Online version: $a Bogus, Carl T. $t Madison's militia $d New York, NY : Oxford University Press, [2023] $z 9780197632246 $w (DLC) 2022037285 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20240717014858.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=6B9A864E9E3C11EE84E191EF36ECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
