They were written by John Balmayn, an unknown Londoner, who travelled to Tuscany to oversee the sale of a valuable wool shipment in 1450-51 on behalf of his master - the Mercer, Sir William Cantelowe. The author uses an intriguing mix of four languages, combining Middle English, Latin and Anglo-French with the administrative Tuscan that he has learnt working alongside Florentine partners, such as the Salviati company. Two other striking features of the text are the extensive use of Arabic numerals, unparalleled in fifteenth-century English accounting, and the unusually detailed descriptions of merchant marks that were used to identify the woolsacks. Overall, the accounts are unique amongst multilingual medieval sources and will interest economic historians and historical linguists alike.--Provided by publisher. 650 0 $a Wool industry $z Tuscany $z Tuscany $x History $y To 1500 $v Sources. 650 0 $a Wool industry $z England $x History $y To 1500 $v Sources. 650 0 $a Multilingualism $z England $x History $y To 1500 $v Sources. 650 7 $a Multilingualism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01028907 650 7 $a Wool industry. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01180027 651 7 $a England. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01219920 651 7 $a Italy $z Tuscany. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204477 648 7 $a To 1500 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 $a Sources. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01423900 700 1 $a Tiddeman, Megan , $e editor. 773 18 $w 990007680040202771 $g no:31858072865946 830 0 $a Records of social and economic history ; $v new ser., 65. 941 $a 2 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231117031016.0 952 $l USUX851 $d 20230503011726.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=723080C0DDAE11EDB031D5162DECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
