Liu's innovative intellectual history traces the organic westward movement of the Chinese concept of tianren heyi, or humanity's unity with heaven. This monistic idea enters the European imaginary through Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci's understanding of Chinese culture, travels through Spinoza's identification of God with nature, becomes ingrained in eighteenth-century English thought via the langscaping theory and practice of William Kent and Horace Walpole, and emerges in the poetry and thought of Coleridge and Wordsworth. In addition to presenting a significantly different reading of the two English poets, Liu contributes to scholarship about English literary history, history of European philosophy and religion, English garden history, and cross-cultural interactions between China and Europe in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references and index. 648 7 $a 1700-1799 $2 fast 650 0 $a English literature $y 18th century $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a Philosophy, Chinese $x Influence. 650 0 $a Romanticism $z England. 650 7 $a English literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00911989 650 7 $a Romanticism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01100133 651 7 $a England. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01219920 655 7 $a Criticism, interpretation, etc. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411635 776 08 $i Online version: $a Liu, Yu, 1955- $t From Chinese cosmology to English romanticism. $d Columbia, South Carolina : University of South Carolina Press ; Taipei City, Taiwan : National Taiwan University Press, [2023] $z 9781643360591 $w (OCoLC)1350797671 $w (OCoLC)1350797671 830 0 $a East-West cultural encounters in literature & cultural studies. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231117031558.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=F1A8FD6056B111EEB3013A8641ECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
