Artists Wadsworth Jarrell, Nelson Stevens, Jae Jarrell, Gerald Williams, and Napoloen Jones-Henderson produced textiles, paintings, sculpture and public art that sought to develop an aesthetic language that resonated with the black community. AFRICOBRA's abstract works convey the rhythmic dynamism of black culture and social life, while the structure of the collective offered a model of artistic practice embedded in the political realities and histories of the community. In this volume, Wadsworth Jarrell, one of the founding members of the AFRICOBRA collective, offers an account of the history of the group and it's founding aesthetic and political principles. The bulk of the manuscript is selected from his archive of materials ranging from exhibition ephemera to photos that show the development of the group's art practice that collectively form a sourcebook history of the group. The sourcebook intersperses documentation of exhibitions, artworks, and the members of the collective in Chicago; documents that outline the aesthetic and political goals of the group written by its members; and writing from Jarrell that narrates the history of the collective from the point of view of its founder. The writing emphasizes the importance of the group's political principles to some of its largest projects, like the Wall of Respect, a public mural in Chicago's Black Belt neighborhood. While work by AFRICOBRA has been shown at the Brooklyn Museum, the Tate, and elsewhere, this will be the first book to present an extensive record of the group's history, practice, and principles. This book will be of interest to our readers in art, African American studies, and cultural studies"-- $c Provided by publisher. 610 20 $a AFRICOBRA (Group of artists) 610 27 $a AFRICOBRA (Group of artists) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01797332 650 0 $a Black Arts movement $z Chicago. $z Chicago. 650 0 $a Ethnicity in art. 650 0 $a Art $x History $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 650 7 $a 20.07 art criticism, art review. $0 (NL-LeOCL)077593715 $2 bcl 650 7 $a ART / General. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a Art $x Political aspects. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00815309 650 7 $a Black Arts movement. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00833583 650 7 $a Ethnicity in art. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00916065 651 7 $a Illinois $z Chicago. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204048 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 648 7 $a 1900-1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 700 1 $a May, Richard Allen, $e writer of foreword. 776 08 $i Online version: $a Jarrell, Wadsworth Aikens, 1929- $t AFRICOBRA $d Durham : Duke University Press, 2020. $z 9781478002246 $w (DLC) 2019032732 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20220317025826.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=9B38F61E403511EB87AA299C42ECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
