At the same time, the enthronement of a series of children brought the question of reconstruction into the heart of the capital. Chinese scholars, Manchu and Mongolian officials, and writers in the press all competed to have their ideas included in the education of young rulers. Each group hoped to use the power of the emperor-both his functional role within the bureaucracy and his symbolic role as an exemplar for the people-to promote reform. Daniel Barish explores debates surrounding the education of the final three Qing emperors, showing how imperial curricula became proxy battles for divergent visions of how to restabilize the country. He sheds light on the efforts of rival figures, who drew on China's dynastic history, Manchu traditions, and the statecraft tools of imperial powers as they sought to remake the state. Barish traces how court education reflected arguments over the introduction of Western learning, the fate of the Manchu Way, the place of women in society, notions of constitutionalism, and emergent conceptions of national identity. He emphasizes how changing ideas of education intersected with a push for a renewed imperial center and national unity, helping create a model of rulership for post-imperial regimes. Through the lens of the education of young emperors, Learning to Rule develops a new understanding of the late Qing era and the relationship between the monarchy and the nation in modern China"-- $c Provided by publisher. 600 00 $a Tongzhi, $c Emperor of China, $d 1856-1875. 600 00 $a Guangxu, $c Emperor of China, $d 1871-1908. 600 00 $a Puyi, $d 1906-1967. 600 07 $a Guangxu, $c Emperor of China, $d 1871-1908. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00099122 600 07 $a Puyi, $d 1906-1967. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00018602 600 07 $a Tongzhi, $c Emperor of China, $d 1856-1875. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00271124 651 0 $a China $x History $y Qing dynasty, 1644-1912. 651 0 $a China $x Politics and government $y 19th century. 650 0 $a Education of princes $z China $x History $y 19th century. 651 0 $a China $x History $x Education $x History $y 19th century. 650 7 $a Education of princes. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00902875 650 7 $a Politics and government. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01919741 650 7 $a Qing Dynasty (China) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01696773 651 7 $a China. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01206073 648 7 $a 1644-1912 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 $i Online version: $a Barish, Daniel. $t Learning to rule $d New York : Columbia University Press, [2021] $z 9780231554961 $w (DLC) 2021023384 830 0 $a Studies of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia University. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231117031425.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=DC00CFB6AE9011EDA0B1416654ECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
