Born only two years apart, Manet (1832-1883) and Degas (1834-1917) were friends, rivals, and, at times, antagonists who worked to define modern painting in France. By examining their careers in parallel and presenting their work side by side, this exhibition investigates how their artistic objectives and approaches both overlapped and diverged. Through more than 150 paintings and works on paper, Manet/Degas takes a fresh look at the interactions of these two artists in the context of the family relationships, friendships, and intellectual circles that influenced their artistic and professional choices, deepening our understanding of a key moment in nineteenth-century French painting. The exhibition is made possible by Alice Cary Brown and W.L. Lyons Brown, the Sherman Fairchild Foundation, and Harry and Linda Fath. Additional support is provided by the Janice H. Levin Fund, the Gail and Parker Gilbert Fund, The Sam and Janet Salz Trust, and Rosalind and Kenneth Landis. It is organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Musees d'Orsay et de l'Orangerie, Paris. This exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities. The catalogue is made possible by Gregory Annenberg Weingarten, GRoW @ Annenberg. Additional support is provided by Anonymous, Robert M. Buxton, Elizabeth Marsteller Gordon, and Claude Wasserstein." $c Metropolitan Museum of Art website. $u https://www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/manet-degas 600 10 $a Manet, Edouard, $d 1832-1883 $v Exhibitions. 600 10 $a Degas, Edgar, $d 1834-1917 $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Art, French $y 19th century $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Painters $z France $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Painting, French $y 19th century $v Exhibitions. 700 1 $a Dunn, Ashley Elizabeth, $e curator. $e curator. $4 cur $4 cur 700 1 $a Manet, Edouard, $d 1832-1883, $e artist. $4 art 700 1 $a Degas, Edgar, $d 1834-1917, $e artist. $4 art 700 1 $a Guegan, Stephane, $e contributor. $4 ctb 700 1 $a Murrell, Denise, $e contributor. $4 ctb 700 1 $a Pierce, Haley S., $e contributor. $4 ctb 700 1 $a Pludermacher, Isolde, $e contributor. $4 ctb 700 1 $a Rodary, Samuel, $e contributor. $4 ctb 700 1 $a Goodman, John, $d 1952 September 19- $e translator. $4 trl 710 2 $a Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, N.Y.), $e issuing body. $e issuing body. $4 isb $4 isb 710 2 $a Musee d'Orsay, $e host institution. $4 his 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231117025654.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=ACC9F7DC851711EEB4A9908744ECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
