Barrow. 264 1 $a DeKalb, Illinois : $b Northern Illinois University Press, $c 2015. 300 $a xii, 216 pages ; $c 24 cm 520 $a "Around Detroit, suburbanization was led by Henry Ford, who not only located a massive factory over the city's border in Dearborn, but also was the first industrialist to make the automobile a mass consumer item. So, suburbanization in the 1920s was spurred simultaneously by the migration of the automobile industry and the mobility of automobile users. A welfare capitalist, Ford was a leader on many fronts--he raised wages, increased leisure time, and transformed workers into consumers, and he was the most effective at making suburbs an intrinsic part of American life. The decade was dominated by this new political economy--also known as "Fordism"--linking mass production and consumption. The rise of Dearborn demonstrated that Fordism was connected to mass suburbanization as well. Ultimately, Dearborn proved to be a model that was repeated throughout the nation, as people of all classes relocated to suburbs, shifting away from central cities. Mass suburbanization was a national phenomenon. Yet the example of Detroit is an important baseline since the trend was more discernable there than elsewhere. Suburbanization, however, was never a simple matter of outlying communities growing in parallel with cities. Instead, resources were diverted from central cities as they were transferred to the suburbs. The example of the Detroit metropolis asks whether the mass suburbanization which originated there represented the "American dream," and if so, by whom and at what cost. This book will appeal to those interested in cities and suburbs, American studies, technology and society, political economy, working-class culture, welfare state systems, transportation, race relations, and business management"-- $c Provided by publisher. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references (pages 197 -209) and index. 600 10 $a Ford, Henry, $d 1863-1947. 600 17 $a Ford, Henry, $d 1863-1947. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00035612 650 0 $a Suburbs $z Detroit $z Detroit $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Suburbs $z Dearborn $z Dearborn $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Cities and towns $z Michigan $x History $x History $y 20th century. 651 0 $a Detroit (Mich.) $x Economic conditions $y 20th century. 651 0 $a Dearborn (Mich.) $x Economic conditions $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Automobile industry and trade $x History $z Michigan $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Fordism $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 651 0 $a United States $x Economic conditions $y 20th century. 650 7 $a HISTORY / United States / State & Local / Midwest (IA, IL, IN, KS, MI, MN, MO, ND, NE, OH, SD, WI). $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a HISTORY / United States / 20th Century. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a POLITICAL SCIENCE / Public Policy / City Planning & Urban Development. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a Automobile industry and trade $x Social aspects. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00823029 650 7 $a Cities and towns $x Growth. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00861781 650 7 $a Economic history. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00901974 650 7 $a Fordism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01748886 650 7 $a Suburbs. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01136941 651 7 $a Michigan. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01208387 651 7 $a Michigan $z Dearborn. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01205237 651 7 $a Michigan $z Detroit. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01205010 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 648 7 $a 1900 - 1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 941 $a 2 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20191213021333.0 952 $l USUX851 $d 20180802020318.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=78C2403055EF11E58B7A61D1DAD10320Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
