Summary:
A decorated but burned out soldier, is escorting the body of a friend killed in Vietnam on the long train ride home. During the trip, he encounters a relentless parade of American caricatures--the philosophical chessplayer, the radical dissident, the travelling salesman, and the sympathetic college girl with whom he falls in love and who gives him a glimer of hope. However, he falls prey to his war-induced paranoia, and these relationships take on nightmarish shapes as reality gives way to his terrifying and brutal hallucinations.
