Summary:
Leonard Bernstein's operetta, based on the classic Voltaire story. Voltaire's Candide begins in Westphalia, Germany, where Candide is tortured by noted philosopher Doctor Pangloss on the idea that "all is for the best...in this best of all worlds." Candide first accepts this philosophy, but as he experiences war, poverty, the maliciousness of man, and the hypocricy of the church, he begins to doubt Pangloss.
