Summary:
Beginning with a dramatic indictment of slavery, this first episode evokes the causes of the war, from the cotton kingdom in the South to the abolitionist movement in the North. Here the major characters are introduced, along with a host of less well-known but equally vital characters. Shown are events immediately preceeding the outbreak of hostilities to the diastrous Union defeat at Manassas, where both sides learned it would be a long war.
