Summary:
The black book: When a part-time prostitute turns up in a shallow grave among shale hills known locally as the Five Sisters, Rebus links her murder with the death of another young woman 10 years earlier. He targets a distinguished member of Parliament as the prime suspect for both cases. But the real proof may lie in an anonymously mailed book, lavishly illustrated and written in rune-like code.
A question of blood: Called to investigate a college shooting, Rebus and his partner, DS Siobhan Clarke, find complete carnage: two dead, bloodied boys, one of whom is Rebus's cousin once removed. A third boy has suffered serious injuries and is taken to the hospital, unable to speak. The suspected shooter (an ex-commando) appears to have taken his own life. Upon closer inspection, Rebus notices that a highly trained assassin died with tears in his eyes.
Strip Jack: When police bust a local brothel, they find Gregor Jack, a millionaire entrepreneur and self-styled antipoverty activist. Later, Jack's wife turns up dead-- murdered in a manner similar to that of a working-class woman in Edinburgh. Did both women fall prey to a serial killer? Or was Mrs. Jack's murder a copy-cat killing?
Let it bleed: Sammy McNally walks into the prestigious investment firm Hammill Ferguson and abruptly blows out his brains with a sawed-off shotgun, directly in front of the firm's founder. Rebus's subsequent investigation leads him to some of Edinburgh's wealthiest and most influential citizens and puts him at odds not only with his boss, DSC Gill Templer, but also with his partner, DS Siobhan Clarke.
