Episode 1: Eleanor Bramwell has her heart set on becoming a surgeon - an ambition unheard of for women in Victorian England. As a favor to her doctor father, eminent surgeon Sir Herbert Hamilton allows Eleanor to assist at the East London Hospital, but Sir Herbert's old-fashioned and barbaric practices - particularly where women are concerned - set Eleanor at odds with her would-be mentor.
Episode 2: With backing from Lady Cora Peters, Eleanor strikes out on her own, opening the charitable Thrift Infirmary in one of London's poorest neighborhoods. To supplement the Thrift, Eleanor agrees to help out in her father's private practice, which leads to a shocking discovery about the senior Dr. Bramwell's interest in one of his patients.
Episode 3: When Lady Cora's pregnant laundry maid is rushed to the Thrift with labor pains, nobody realizes that she will lead them into the criminal underworld. Eleanor's Victorian outlook is given a jolt when she discovers that the maid is married to a black man, who has gotten himself into trouble with the police. Eleanor is torn between helping him and staying on the right side of the law.
Episode 4: Eleanor is flattered by the attentions of Dr. Samuel Hunter, who is first to pledge financial support for the struggling Thrift at a party organized by Lady Cora Peters. But when Dr. Hunter's housekeeper dies, Eleanor becomes suspicious of her apparent suitor and puts her professional reputation on the line when she accuses him of committing murder.
Episode 5: Dr. Robert Bramwell's experiments with the "new science" of electro-therapy lands him in hot water. Meanwhile Eleanor has her own problems when she and Nurse Carr visit the East End slums to do tuberculosis tests. They are stunned when a consumptive patient they encounter refuses treatment after being diagnosed with TB. Eleanor's persistence leads her deep into a family scandal.
Episode 6: Eleanor is furious when Lady Peters arranges a meeting between the Thrift and Sir Herbert Hamilton and the governors of the East London Hospital. She is outraged by their proposal to take over the Thrift and disappointed with Cora and Joe Marsham, who are enthusiastic about the idea. But the dispute between Eleanor and Cora masks another crisis much closer to home.
Episode 7: Dr. Robert Bramwell plays matchmaker between Eleanor and an old friend, Major Hyde. While in her care at the Thrift, a belligerent boxer with a head injury tries to take advantage of Eleanor, proving--at least to Major Hyde--that the stress of running the clinic is too much for Eleanor. Her passion for her career is put to the ultimate test. When Lady Peters falls seriously ill and Sir Herbert recommends little more than bed rest, Eleanor intercedes on her behalf. The resulting confrontation with Sir Herbert leads to a dramatic and stunning conclusion.
Summary:
Bramwell follows the fortunes of Dr. Eleanor Bramwell in her pursuit of public health and private amours in Victorian-era London. Feisty and unconventional, her sights are set on becoming a leading surgeon, an ambition unheard of for women in Victorian society. Dr. Eleanor Bramwell struggles against society's odds to become a leading female surgeon in 1895 London.
