Sandhill cranes migrate thousands of miles and traditional rest stops along the way are vital to their survival. The most important of these is the Platte River of Nebraska where a flock of nearly half a million float down each spring to rest and feed. But most of the Platte's waters have been diverted and the remainder is threatened by yet more dams. If this happens, the ancient and faithful migration of cranes may fail.
