Summary:
Nuggin Taylor is a first mate on a slave ship in 1842. When a mutiny overthrows the ship's skipper and leaves him in charge, he frees his cargo. Back in England, charges against Nuggin and his fellow shipmate Powdah are dropped. Nuggin is approached by British intelligence agents and asked to embark on a secret information-gathering mission that could end the African slave trade for good. Nuggin agrees and Powdah accompanies him on a ship bound for America. Both men fall in love while on shipboard, Nuggin with Margaret and Powdah with Babsie. The action is just getting under way when a girl accidentally sets fire to the ship by leaving a lantern next to the straw floor below deck. During the fire and with rough seas, the men are culled from the boys, and Nuggin's sweetheart's brother, who is a slave trader, is killed and she blames Nuggin. Nuggin is finally put on trial for his life and the loss of the ship.
