In the ruined streets of Havana's Old Chinatown, Conde, a former policeman turned-used-bookseller, can't help but remember years ago in 1989 when he was there at the request of the irresistible woman lieutenant Paticia Chion. She had asked him to investigate a stange case, the murder of a lonely man who was found hanged with his dog; the man was missing a finger and had a circle and two arrows engraved with a knife in the chest. It seemed to be a ritual of santería which would require that investigators look for clues in other parts of the city. However, Conde discovered unexpected threads of secret business dealings and a history of misfortune that revealed the hidden reality of many Asian immigrant families. As the Chinese expression goes, he had to find the snake's tail in order to get to the head.
