Summary:

Oharu, an old prostitute recalls her eventful life. As a young woman, she was a high-class courtesan. When a young samurai, Katsunosuke, falls in love with her and their affair is revealed, her family is banished. Oharu then becomes a mistress of Lord Matsudaira, but she is dismissed after giving birth to an heir. She is sold to a brothel in Shimabara and thereafter sinks deeper into degradation.
