Summary:
"The authors present a new edition of all fragments of the laws of Draco and Solon with the original Greek and Latin texts, a German translation and a detailed commentary as well as a historical classification. The revision results in new interpretations for many fragments of the law. This allows for a fundamentally new historical assessment of the legislatures of Draco and Solon and their legislation, and a more accurate grasp of the political, economic and social problems in Athens during this period. The edition enables a new perspective on the writing phase of ancient law in the late 7th and early 6th centuries BC. -- as an answer to urgent problems. It covers homicide laws and the establishment of tyranny, regulations governing eligibility for political office, procedural law and legitimate autonomy, the calendar of victims and religious offences, cowardice in the face of the enemy, sexual offenses, acts of violence, theft and insults, on contract law and family law. The legal fragments are also of central importance for the law of obligations in the Solonian period" -- Publisher.
