Starting in Europe, this book journeys through France across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas and then on to Asia and Oceania. Highlighting diverse identities of artisans, the authors trace how these historical actors formed networks at local and global levels to assert their own forms of expertise and experience. These artisans - some anonymous, eminent, and outside the margins - translated European Enlightenment thinking into a number of disciplines and trades including architecture, botany, ceramics, construction, furniture, gardening, horology, interior design, manuscript illustration, and mining. In each thematic section of this illustrated volume, two leading scholars present contrasting case studies of artisans in different geographic contexts. These paired chapters are also followed by shorter commentary that reflects on pertinent themes from both chapters. Emphasizing how and why artisanal histories around the world impacted civic and private life, commerce, cultural engagement, and sense of place, this book introduces new richness and depth to the conversations around the ambivalent and fragmented nature of the Enlightenment."--Provided by publisher. 650 0 $a Handicraft $x History $y 18th century $v Congresses. 650 0 $a Artisans $x History $y 18th century $v Congresses. $v Congresses. 650 0 $a Enlightenment $v Congresses. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008103213 650 0 $a Arts and transnationalism $v Congresses. 650 7 $a Artisans. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/817519 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/817519 650 7 $a Arts and transnationalism. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/2003497 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/2003497 650 7 $a Enlightenment. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/912527 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/912527 650 7 $a Handicraft. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/950959 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/950959 648 7 $a 1700-1799 $2 fast 655 7 $a Cross-cultural studies. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423769 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1423769 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 700 1 $a Cannady, Lauren R., $d 1982- $e editor. $4 http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2021098238 700 1 $a Ferng, Jennifer, $e editor. $4 http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2021098996 710 2 $a Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. $b Research and Academic Program, $e host institution. $4 http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/his 711 2 $a Artisanal Praxis and State Power (Colloquium) $d (2017 : $c Williamstown, Mass.) 776 08 $i ebook version : $z 9781800857841 773 18 $w 990075856550202771 $g no:31858071394278 830 0 $a Oxford University studies in the Enlightenment ; $v 2021:06. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2014033230 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20220317013334.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=71230224323411EC8B1165C359ECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
