Yet even though the Germans had established strong defensive positions around St. Mihiel and its neighboring villages and towns, the salient was highly vulnerable to attack and was an optimal target for a potential American operation. Until this point in the war, members of the American Expeditionary Forces had not fought in a formation larger than a corps, and then only under French or British leadership. Now, as part of the American First Army under General John J. Pershing, they prepared to launch an offensive that would demonstrate to the Allies and the Germans alike that the Americans were capable of operating as an independent command. The AEF's successful efforts in the St. Mihiel Offensive, and the hard-won operational and tactical lessons that it learned during the battle, helped set the stage for the grand Allied offensive that would seize the initiative on the Western Front and blaze a path toward ultimate victory in the war. 530 $a Also available via the World Wide Web. 610 10 $a United States. $b Infantry Division, 1st. $b Infantry Division, 1st. 610 17 $a United States. $b Infantry Division, 1st. $b Infantry Division, 1st. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00558401 611 07 $a Saint-Mihiel, Battle of (France : 1918) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01103647 611 27 $a World War (1914-1918) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01180746 650 0 $a Saint-Mihiel, Battle of, Saint-Mihiel, France, 1918. 650 0 $a World War, 1914-1918 $x Campaigns $z France. 650 0 $a World War, 1914-1918 $z United States. 650 0 $a World War, 1914-1918 $x Regimental histories $z United States. 650 7 $a Military campaigns. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01710190 650 7 $a Regimental histories. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01354209 651 7 $a France $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204289 651 7 $a France $z Saint-Mihiel $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01229851 651 7 $a United States $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 648 7 $a 1914-1918 $2 fast 710 2 $a Center of Military History, $e issuing body. 830 0 $a U.S. Army campaigns of World War I. 830 0 $a CMH pub ; $v 77-7. 856 41 $u https://history.army.mil/html/books/077/77-7/cmhPub_077-7.pdf 941 $a 2 952 $l UPAX334 $d 20230104040453.0 952 $l UNUX074 $d 20190205031726.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=D60AFFD8291411E989B08DF896128E48 994 $a Z0 $b NIUInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
