In the nineteenth century, there was a frenzy of interest in ancient Egypt. At the same time, European powers sent off waves of explorations intended to map the unknown corners of the globe--and extend their colonial empires. Two British men--Richard Burton and John Hanning Speke--were sent by the Royal Geographical Society to claim the prize for England. Burton was already famous for being the first non-Muslim to travel to Mecca, disguised as an Arab chieftain. He spoke twenty-nine languages, was a decorated soldier, and literally wrote the book on sword-fighting techniques for the British Army. He was also mercurial, subtle, and an iconoclastic atheist. Speke was a young aristocrat and Army officer determined to make his mark, passionate about hunting, Burton's opposite in temperament and beliefs. From the start the two men clashed, Speke chafing under Burton's command and Burton disapproving of Speke's ignorance of the people whose lands through which they traveled. They would endure tremendous hardships, illness, and constant setbacks. Two years in, deep in the African interior, Burton became too sick to press on, but Speke did, and claimed he found the source in a great lake that he christened Lake Victoria. When they returned to England, Speke rushed to take credit, disparaging Burton. Burton disputed his claim, and Speke launched another expedition to Africa to prove it. The two became venomous enemies, with the public siding with the more charismatic Burton, to Speke's great envy. The day before they were to publicly debate, Speke shot himself. Yet there was a third man on both expeditions, his name obscured by imperial annals, whose exploits were even more extraordinary. This was Sidi Mubarak Bombay, who was enslaved and shipped from his home village in East Africa to India. When the man who purchased him died, he made his way into the local Sultan's army, and eventually traveled back to Africa, where he used his resourcefulness, linguistic prowess and raw courage to forge a living as a guide. Without his talents, it is likely that neither Englishman would have come close to the headwaters of the Nile, or perhaps even survived"--!cProvided by publisher. 600 10 $a Burton, Richard Francis, $c Sir, $d 1821-1890 $x Travel $z Nile River. 600 10 $a Speke, John Hanning, $d 1827-1864 $x Travel $z Nile River. 600 10 $a Bombay, Sidi Mubarak $x Travel $z Nile River. 600 17 $a Burton, Richard Francis, $c Sir, $d 1821-1890. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01810505 600 17 $a Speke, John Hanning, $d 1827-1864. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00038529 648 7 $a 1800-1899 $2 fast 650 0 $a Explorers $z Nile River $x History $y 19th century. 650 0 $a Explorers $v Biography. 650 6 $a Explorateurs $0 (CaQQLa)201-0378908 $z Nil (Fleuve) $0 (CaQQLa)201-0406028 $x Histoire $0 (CaQQLa)201-0378908 $y 19e sieÌcle. $0 (CaQQLa)201-0378908 650 7 $a Discoveries in geography. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00894950 650 7 $a Explorers. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00918556 650 7 $a Travel. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01155558 651 0 $a Nile River $x Discovery and exploration. 651 0 $a Nile River Valley $x Discovery and exploration. 651 6 $a Nil (Fleuve) $0 (CaQQLa)201-0377631 $x DeÌcouverte et exploration. $0 (CaQQLa)201-0377631 651 6 $a Nil, ValleÌe du $0 (CaQQLa)201-0377631 $x DeÌcouverte et exploration. $0 (CaQQLa)201-0377631 651 7 $a Nile River. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01242174 651 7 $a Nile River Valley. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01274166 655 2 $a Biography $0 (DNLM)D019215 655 7 $a Audiobooks. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01726208 655 7 $a Biographies. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01919896 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 $a Biographies. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Travel writing. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Audiobooks. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Biographies. $2 rvmgf $0 (CaQQLa)RVMGF-000000519 655 7 $a Livres audio. $2 rvmgf $0 (CaQQLa)RVMGF-000000202 700 1 $a Michael, Paul $c (Actor), $e narrator. 856 4 $3 View cover art $u https://thumbnail.midwesttape.com/14598145_180.jpg 941 $a 11 945 $a cdab 952 $l DFPC353 $d 20240430021520.0 952 $l UGPF911 $d 20231207021916.0 952 $l BOPG851 $d 20231010033328.0 952 $l FXPH314 $d 20230808010313.0 952 $l NYPE343 $d 20230427010410.0 952 $l WAPD715 $d 20230401010506.0 952 $l SAPG074 $d 20220924010241.0 952 $l YTPG232 $d 20220902011600.0 952 $l TCPG826 $d 20220902010336.0 952 $l LAPH975 $d 20220804024829.0 952 $l CDPF771 $d 20220602010625.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=60E24630E23911EC9D80461122ECA4DB 994 $a C0 $b C@VInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
