Omnibus accidents were commonplace. Pedestrians were regularly attacked by the Five Points' gangs. Rival police forces watched and argued over who should help. Pickpockets, drunks and kidnappers were all part of the daily street scene in old New York. Yet somehow, they endured and transformed a trading post into the Empire City. None of this was on Elizabeth Jennings's mind as she climbed the platform onto the Chatham Street horsecar. But her destination and that of the country took a sudden turn when the conductor told her to wait for the next car because it had "her people" in it. When she refused to step off the bus, she was assaulted by the conductor who was aided by a NY police officer. On February 22, 1855, Elizabeth Jennings v. Third Avenue Rail Road case was settled. Seeking $500 in damages, the jury stunned the courtroom with a $250 verdict in Lizzie's favor. Future US president Chester A. Arthur was Jennings' attorney and their lives would be forever onward intertwined. This is the story of what happened that day. It's also the story of Jennings' and Arthur's families, the struggle for equality, and race relations. It's the history of America at its most despicable and most exhilarating. Yet few historians know of Elizabeth Jennings or the impact she had on desegregating public transit. 600 10 $a Graham, Elizabeth Jennings, $d 1827-1901. 600 10 $a Arthur, Chester Alan, $d 1829-1886. 600 17 $a Arthur, Chester Alan, $d 1829-1886. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00000577 650 0 $a African American women $z New York $z New York $v Biography. 650 0 $a African Americans $z New York $z New York $v Biography. 650 0 $a Civil rights workers $z New York $z New York $v Biography. 650 0 $a African Americans $x History $z New York $z New York $x History $y 19th century. 650 0 $a Segregation in transportation $z New York $z New York $x History $y 19th century. 650 0 $a African American teachers $v Biography. 651 0 $a New York (State) $x Race relations. 651 0 $a New York (State) $v Biography. 650 7 $a African American teachers. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00799384 650 7 $a African American women. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00799438 650 7 $a African Americans. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00799558 650 7 $a African Americans $x Civil rights. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00799575 650 7 $a Civil rights workers. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00862721 650 7 $a Race relations. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01086509 650 7 $a Segregation in transportation. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01111234 651 7 $a New York (State) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01210280 651 7 $a New York (State) $z New York. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204333 648 7 $a 1800-1899 $2 fast 655 7 $a Biographies. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01919896 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 $a Biographies. $2 lcgft 776 08 $i Online version: $a Mikorenda, Jerry. $t America's first freedom rider. $d Guilford, Connecticut : Lyons Press, [2020] $z 9781493041350 $w (OCoLC)1131818761 941 $a 3 952 $l OZAX845 $d 20240525041810.0 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20210721014556.0 952 $l GDPF771 $d 20210520010331.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=CBF9B23268DD11EA9C5A9E4D97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
