However, scholars of parables in literature have often overlooked the 19th-century novel, assuming that realism--the fiction of the probable and the commonplace--bears no relation to the subversive, iconoclastic genre of parable. But the Victorian literary engagement with the parable genre was not merely a matter of the useful or telling allusion. Susan E. ColÂ£Ì shows that authors such as Charles Dickens, Margaret Oliphant, and Charlotte Yonge appreciated the power of parables to deliver an ethical charge that was as unexpected as it was disruptive to conventional moral complacency. Against the common assumption that the genres of realism and parable are polar opposites, this study explores how Victorian novels, despite their length, verisimilitude, and multi-plot complexity, can become parables in ways that imitate, interpret, and challenge their biblical sources"-- $c Provided by publisher. 650 0 $a English fiction $y 19th century $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a Parables in literature. 650 0 $a Christianity and literature $z England $x History $y 19th century. 650 0 $a Christianity in literature. 830 0 $a New directions in religion and literature. 856 41 $3 Table of contents $u http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=024772681&line_number=0002&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA 856 42 $3 Cover image $u http://covers.nbnbooks.com/L/14/411/1441146504.jpg 856 4 $u http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=024772681&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA $z Klappentext 941 $a 1 952 $l USUX851 $d 20240202025610.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=FA91749E6B5311E69AFE1DDBDAD10320 994 $a C0 $b IWAInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
