Documents the dramatic events surrounding the harvest of the opium poppy crop in the Colombian rain forest, through the experiences of the peasants and other indigenous peoples involved in the harvest. Shows how specific social and economic conditions forced many of Colombia's indigenous communities into the poppy trade. Members of the communities describe the social collapse that has occurred as a result of harvesting the crop, from rampant alcoholism to chronic violence.
