Summary:
The airman never sees the faces of the people, but only the face of the country. This statement is confirmed with the footage from these two documentaries produced for the U.S. Army Air Force by William Wyler. The Memphis Belle and Thunderbolt contain actual sights and sounds of the dangerous missions completed by the WWII Air Force over Germany and Italy. The former portrays a bombing mission over Germany during World War II, including preparations for the raid, the takeoff from England, the flight, bombing the submarine base at Wilhelmshaven, and the return to base. The latter tells about the 57th Fighter Group which participated in Operation Strangle in Italy in 1944 while flying the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter-bomber from bases in Corsica.
