Her visions were first recorded in Latin, and they inspired generations of readers in processes of creative rewriting. The vernacular copies of these redactions challenge the long-standing idea that translations do not bear the same literary or historical weight as the originals upon which they are based. In this study, Racha Kirakosian argues that manuscript transmission reveals how redactors serve as cultural agents. Examining the late medieval vernacular copies of Gertrude's visions, she demonstrates how redactors recast textual materials, reflected changes in piety, and generated new forms of devotional practices. She also shows) how these texts served as a bridge between material culture, in the form of textiles and book illumination, and mysticism. Kirakosian's multi-faceted study is an important contribution to current debates on medieval manuscript culture, authorship, and translation as objects of study in their own right"-- $c Provided by publisher. 505 00 $a Machine generated contents note: $t Final Remarks. $t Vernacular Rewritings -- $t Structure of the Study -- $g 6. $t The Helfta Scriptorium -- $t The Convent's Writing Culture -- $t Revisited Writing Scenarios -- $t Women Writing Collectively -- $g 2. $t Redactions Within a Dynamic Textuality -- $t Existing Research Revisited -- $t New Insights -- $t Carthusian Influence -- $t A Culture of Redacting -- $t Dynamic Textuality -- $g 3. $t Manuscript Transmission History -- $t Comprehensive Text Witnesses -- $t The Buxheim Text Witnesses -- $t A Set of Carnival Prayers -- $t Devotional Miscellanies -- $t A South-German Network -- $t Saints' Lives -- $t St Katharina in Nuremberg -- $g 4. $t The Book's Self-Reflectivity -- $t Writing Imagery -- $t Corporeal Images and Imagination -- $t God, the Author, and His Scribes -- $t Voicing the Word -- $t Ontological Effects -- $g 5. $t The Scriptorial Heart -- $t The Heart of the Passion -- $t The Heart as Gateway to Salvation -- $t The Heart as a Musical Organ -- $t Writing from the Heart -- $t Excursus: John the Evangelist as Mystical Scribe -- $g 6. $t Imaginary Textiles -- $t Textile Culture -- $t Time and Temporality -- $t Participatory Visibility -- $t Transformative Embodiment -- $t Visionary Craftmanship -- $t Imperfect Textiles and the Forgiveness of Sins -- $t Final Remarks. 600 00 $a Gertrude, $c the Great, Saint, $d 1256-1302. 600 07 $a Gertrude, $c the Great, Saint, $d 1256-1302. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00125711 650 0 $a Manuscripts, Medieval $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a Transmission of texts. 650 7 $a Manuscripts, Medieval. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01008422 650 7 $a Transmission of texts. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01154863 655 7 $a Criticism, interpretation, etc. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411635 776 08 $i Online version: $a Kirakosian, Racha, 1986-, $t From the material to the mystical in late medieval piety $d Cambridge, United Kingdom ; New York, NY, USA : Cambridge University Press, 2020. $z 9781108893657 $w (DLC) 2020022771 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231117032653.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=1626C252BFA611ECA5AD8FDE3CECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
