1890: A frostbitten foot ends Kent Rasmussen's eight-year hitch with the Northwest Mounted Police. He needs a new line of work. Meanwhile, Nellie Newburn needs a guard to help her transport a quarter-million in Confederate funds from a Canadian bank to her home in Missouri, where her ailing grandfather hopes to fund a new secession movement. When Rasmussen agrees to take the job, he is drawn into a long-standing feud and the search for a vast New Mexican hoard of gold cached by the Southern secret society known as the Knights of the Golden Circle.
