In this way, poetry gets conflated with writing a thesis or project, and the poet simply the presenter of perfectly argued language. When poets attempt to bridge the gap between genres and write within the contemporary essay form, they are tasked to construct perfect arguments there as well and avoid the associative and aesthetic logic that makes poems important. The term essay itself was coined by Michel de Montaigne in the 1500s -- it comes from the French word essai, which means to test or experiment with what one knows as a learning tool, and is in partial opposition to the terms we use to discuss the essay now. Essays calls on thinkers and writers to move beyond this linear thinking into the realm of what an essay by someone like Montaigne might do. His essays do as they say they will--they test out ideas, they are unafraid to get messy in their execution, they are brave enough to go forward into the uncharted waters. In them, it's completely beside the point to get back to where they started, let alone where they'd say they would go. They are simply beside the point. It's true."-- $c Publisher description. 505 00 $g Introduction / $r MoÌnica de la Torre -- $t The poet's essay Q&A--transcription. $t Just captions / $r Ariel Goldberg -- $t Antiwest or the beginning / $r Ken Chen -- $t The cheerful scapegoat / $r Wayne Koestenbaum -- $t The essay, the manifesto, and the poetic imagination -- $t Poetry, the body, manifesto / $r Tracie Morris -- $t A poet's essay is a conversation / $r AnaiÌs Duplan -- $t Burning cane fields / $r Raquel Salas Rivera -- $t Contradictions, the sea, and the snow: a poem-essay as the open space -- $t Four short and unfinished essays (with poems) from the ruins of Japanese American incarceration / $r Brandon Shimoda -- $t The poet's essay / $r Cecilia VicunÌa (transcript) -- $t recess and nonsense / $r Fred Moten -- $t What is an afterword / $r MoÌnica de la Torre -- $t The poet's essay Q&A--transcription. 650 0 $a American essays $y 21st century. 700 1 $a Goldberg, Ariel, $e contributor. 700 1 $a Chen, Ken, $d 1979- $e contributor. 700 1 $a Koestenbaum, Wayne, $e contributor. 700 1 $a Morris, Tracie, $e contributor. 700 1 $a Duplan, Anais, $e contributor. 700 1 $a Salas Rivera, Roque Raquel, $e contributor. 700 1 $a Shimoda, Brandon, $e contributor. 700 1 $a VicunÌa, Cecilia, $e contributor. 700 1 $a Moten, Fred, $e contributor. 700 1 $a Lasky, Dorothea, $d 1978- $e editor. 700 1 $a Torre, MoÌnica de la, $e writer of afterword. 941 $a 1 952 $l USUX851 $d 20240717030730.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=C1E96FFEC19D11EEA89D2B6520ECA4DB 994 $a C0 $b IWAInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
