Edmondson began carving at the onset of the Depression in Tennessee. Initially creating tombstones for his community, over time he expanded his practice to include biblical subjects, the natural world, and recognizable figures including nurses and preachers. This book features new essays that explore Edmondson's life in the South and his reception on the East Coast in the 1930s. Reading the artist through lenses of African American experience, the authors draw parallels between then and now, highlighting the complex relationship between Black cultural production and the American museum. Countering existing narratives that have viewed Edmondson as a passive actor in an unfolding drama--a self-taught sculptor "discovered" by White patrons and institutions--this book considers how the artist's identity and position within history influenced his life and work."-- $c Distributor's website. 600 10 $a Edmondson, William, $d 1882?-1951 $v Exhibitions. 600 17 $a Edmondson, William, $d 1882?-1951. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00154906 650 0 $a Sculpture, American $y 20th century $v Exhibitions. 655 7 $a Exhibition catalogs. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01424028 655 7 $a Exhibition catalogs. $2 lcgft 700 12 $a Edmondson, William, $d 1882?-1951. $t Works. $k Selections. 700 1 $a Claiborne, James, $e editor. 700 1 $a Ireson, Nancy, $e editor. $1 https://isni.org/isni/0000000115648705 700 1 $a Fernandes, Brendan, $d 1979- $e artist. $e artist. 700 1 $a King-Hammond, Leslie, $d 1944- $e contributor. 700 1 $a Knight, Christina A., $d 1983- $e contributor. 700 1 $a Morgan, Kelli, $d 1980- $e contributor. 700 1 $a Dahl-Wolfe, Louise, $e photographer. 700 1 $a Weston, Edward, $d 1886-1958, $e photographer. 710 2 $a Barnes Foundation, $e publisher $e publisher $1 https://isni.org/isni/0000000121492639 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231117012819.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=3A08A072851711EEB4A9908744ECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
